They are demanding implementation of 6th Pay Commission report.
The indefinite strike was called by the Maharashtra Federation of University and College Teachers Organisations (MFUCTO) on Tuesday.
However, the state minister of Higher and Technical Education Rajesh Tope is meeting teachers to resolve the differences.
"The meeting with the minister began around 2 pm today and is underway," said General Secretary of MFUCTO Prof Tapati Mukhopadhyay said.
The talks are moving in positive direction. By late evening, we may be able to say something on the nature of discussions and its outcome, she said.
The government is looking at the issue sympathetically and will be considering it possibly in the next cabinet meeting, a senior official from the higher education department said.
On June 4, Tope had assured in the Legislative Council to implement 6th pay Commission recommendations for university and college teachers by mid-July.
