Maharastra Teachers' strike: Talks fall through

Even after three days of intensive discussions between the teacher and the Govt, the two sides seems to have reached a common ground. The strike which begun on tuesday, is all set to continue.

Members of the Maharashtra Federation of University and College Teachers' Organisations (MFUCTO) have been on a strike for almost a week now, protesting against the non-implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission salaries for college and university teachers and the discriomination shown against teachers who had not cleared NET/SLET at a time when these exams were not compulsory.

"We had hoped to solve the dispute by Friday, but there are several legal and financial issues that need to be addressed. We are examining the teachers' demands and we hope to arrive at a conclusion as soon as possible,'' said J Saharia, principal secretary, state higher and technical education department.

According to MFUCTO president CR Sadasivan, teachers wanted the government's commitment in writing. "On Thursday, the government gave us a four-line note on the Sixth Pay Commission salaries that is unsatisfactory,'' Sadasivan said. A resolution is yet to be reached over NET/SLET exams.
