New Pension Scheme scheduled to open to public from 1st April 2009, deffered due to Model Code of Conduct of Election.

Recent News 
Keeping in view the Model Code of Conduct for Elections, it has not been possible for PFRDA to continue this information campaign and undertake other preparatory activities as originally scheduled. It has, accordingly, been decided to defer the date of the extension of the NPS to other citizens. 

New Pension Scheme is now going to be opened for public w.e.f. 01.04.2009. 
As per PFRDA’s (The Pension Fund Regulatory Development Authority of India) latest announcement, any individual including the Government employees who were not covered by NPS earlier will be able to start a New Pension account and start saving up for a pension.
The scheme is already operational for new entrants of the Central Govt. and a few state Governments w.e.f. 01.01.2004. Now it is being offerred to General public.

As of now, NPS is awaiting constitutional approval as PFRDA Bill, 2005 is yet to be passed in Parliament. However, Government through its executive orders has made all interim arrangements to set the ball rolling.
