As per the UGC clarification, mentioned on its website, all the incumbent Readers and Lecturers (selection grade) who have completed three years of teaching would be re-designated as Associate Professors.
Meanwhile, the teachers here while welcoming the clarification said that it was due to the pressure mounted on the UGC by them, especially the strike call given by the Federation of central university teachers association (FEDCUTA). The two-day strike by the FEDCUTA ended on Friday.
The AUCCTA members met at the Sanskrit department of AU on Friday. While welcoming the UGC clarification, AUCCTA postponed its proposed protest at UGC on February 24. However, the body would meet again on Saturday to chalk-out a memorandum regarding the issues pertaining to the welfare of the teachers, both of AU and degree colleges. The memorandum would be handed over to the varsity authorities.
Though teachers abstained from teaching on Friday too, practical examinations were held as per schedule.
It may be mentioned that the strike was called in view of the draft regulation of the UGC on the new pay scale of the central university teachers. The bone of contention was the requirement of existing readers facing another selection committee for being promoted to associate professorship. This was in contradiction of the official notification of ministry of human resource development dated December31, 2008 wherein it was mentioned that all existing readers be placed in the new scale of associated professor without facing any selection committee.
While the AU arts faculty wore a deserted look, some activity was seen in the science faculty owing to the ongoing practical examinations.
