Judicial Pay Hike : Maharashtra to implement Padmanabhan panel report

Maharashtra cabinet today [15/09} decided to implement the proposals of the Supreme Court-appointed second National Judicial Pay Commission (NJPC) for trial court judges, with retrospective effect from January 2006.


The state government will incur an expenditure of Rs 195 crore towards arrears and an annual expenditure of Rs 55 crore. The decision would benefit 1880 serving and 488 retired staff, an official said.

The NJPC had proposed over three-fold jump in their pay and was headed by Justice E Padmanabhan, a former judge of the Madras High Court.

The recommendations of the first NJPC headed by Justice Jagannatha Shetty in 1999 had entitled civil judge (junior division) starting salary of Rs 11,775, civil judge (senior division) Rs 15,200, district judge (entry level) Rs 20,800 and district judge (super time scale) Rs 23,850.
