WB considering raising college teacher retirement age

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday assured to consider raising the retirement age for college lecturers from 60 to 65.

Speaking to media on the sidelines of a cultural event organised in Shri Shikshayatan College in south Kolkata, the Chief Minister said, “Financial condition has been worsened steadily in past few years but we are still looking into the matter.”

Recently, Education Minister Bratya Basu had written a letter to Banerjee asking her to enhance the retirement age. According to sources, Mamata has accepted his proposal.

This move will benefit teachers of the 17 government and over 400 private colleges as well as 17 universities in the state.

The issue has been on the boil in the state since the mid 1990s, when a lobby of college lecturers had demanded the retirement age be raised from 60 to 62.

Earlier, the erstwhile Left Front government had decided to implement the G K Chaddha Committee recommendation for increasing the salaries of college and university teachers by 70 percent.
