Civic unions called off their token strike after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Commission(BMC) administration accepted their demand to implement the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations. This decision will benefit 1,24,000 employees and 30,000 contract labourers.
The modalities of the agreement will be ironed out by August-end.
"We will be implementing the provisions of the Sixth Pay Commission laid down by the Centre. At this juncture, we cannot give an estimate of the burden incurred by the civic exchequer," said municipal commissioner Subodh Kumar. Under the revised pay scale, a Class IV employee will now get between Rs 16,000 and Rs 20,000, which includes basic pay, dearness allowance, house rent allowance and transport. The arrears are likely to be calculated since 2007. "We have been demanding that the recommendations are implemented soon. We shall expedite the process so the employees get the benefit soon. This decision will tentatively cost the exchequer around Rs 300 crore," said Sharad Rao, president of an employees' union.
