Karnataka employees to stage protest tomorrow over "inadequate and misleading" pay hike

Secretariat staff to stage protest tomorrow

After protests by Pre-University lecturers for a wage hike, the State Government faces another protest for a salary hike, this time by the employees of its Secretariat.

Announcing that the employees will stage a protest here on May 4, Mahadevaiah Mathpati, president of the Karnataka Government Secretariat Employees Association, which claims the support of nearly 3,500 employees, told presspersons here on Wednesday that the hike announced by the Government under the Sixth Pay Commission was “inadequate and misleading”.
“According to the Government and news reports, our salaries have been doubled. However, since the basic pay and Dearness Allowance have been merged, we have received only a 22.5 per cent pay hike,” he said.
“Considering a five per cent increase per year, we needed to get a 35 per cent increase in salaries since it was revised seven years ago,” Mr. Mahadevaiah said.
He said that the salaries of Grade D employees had been revised from Rs. 4,800 to Rs. 9,600, which the Government termed as having been doubled. “However, what people don't know is that Rs. 1,200 given as DA had been cancelled, the effective salary given (considering other allowances) is Rs. 12,300, a marginal increase from Rs. 10,044 given to us before,” said Mr. Mahadevaiah.
