In a bid to provide relief from high inflation, the government today increased dearness allowance (DA) by 6 per cent to 51 per cent, benefiting over 50 lakh central government employees and 38 lakh pensioners.
"The decision to hike DA was taken by the Union Cabinet at its meeting here," a Union minister said.
The combined impact of the hike will be Rs 5,715.90 crore per annum. However in the next financial year, the burden on the exchequer would be Rs 6,668.52 crore after the additional 6 per cent DA payout is factored in from January 1 to March 31 this year.
The increased DA, which will be effective from January 1, is provided to government staff and pensioners to compensate them for rising prices.
Presently, the DA is paid at 45 per cent of basic pay.

Congratulations to all CG employees for 6 % DA increase. Besides this some allowances will also increased by 25%. But Can anybody tell whether the convenience allowance and transport allowance will be increased by 25 percent or not. also differentiate among these two.
Dear Roop,
Transport allowance will not increase as we get DA on it.Transport allowance is given for travel between home and office and Conveyance allowance for travel on office work from your office to any other place within the city.

As the transport allowance automaticaly revised on increase of DA rates but merger of DA in TRansport allowance or increase by any% is not allowed in the 6th CPC. So only Travelling allowance & Education Allowance will be increased by 25% on this increase of DA.
Narender Sharma.
Because Transport allowance will not be increased by any% so the representative in the Central Govt. Offices should not comments on the increase by 25%. Transport allowance will be increased just by 6% w.e.f. 01/01/2011.
