The state secretariat on Tuesday morning wore a deserted look as nearly eight lakh government employees went on a day's collective leave protesting against the alleged non-implementation of recommendations under the Sixth Pay Commission. Throughout Madhya Pradesh, works at 62 government departments came to a standstill as employees hit the streets with a charter of 50 demands including hike in their pay-scales and dearness allowance.
Functioning of state-run hospitals, offices, schools, colleges came to a total halt while many patients, students and citizens endlessly waited outside the vacant corridors of government buildings.
As many as 72 state employees' associations participated in the day-long strike and warned that if the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government did not accept their demands, the strike would turn indefinite from April 17.
But the government seemed not to be taking much interest in the employees' threats. Minister for health and government spokesman Narottam Mishra said that the strike and its consequences have been "unofficially" discussed at the cabinet level. Asked if any minister has been given the responsibility of holding talks with the demonstrating state employees associations, Mishra said: "Principal secretaries of all departments have been directed to speak to employees in their sections and resolve the matter.''
