New Delhi, Nov 24 (PTI) An apex body of workers of the media organisations today warned of nation-wide dharnas against non-implementation of wage recommendations by newspapers and news agencies even after their notification by the government. A decision to this effect was taken at an emergency meeting of Confederation of Newspaper and News Agency Employees' Organisations (CNNAEO), representing prominent workers bodies of media organisations across the country.
The meeting strongly condemned the "anti-worker" attitude of Indian Newspaper Society (INS) by putting "pressure" on the newspapers and news agencies not to give wage hike to journalists and non-journalists. The members also decided to approach the central as well as state governments to force newspapers and news agencies to implement the Majithia wage boards recommendations notified on November 11 without any further delay, CNNAEO General Secretary M S Yadav said. He said the Confederation leaders would appeal to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi to intervene in the interest of workers like former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi had done in 1989. They also demanded that government should make an amendment in the Working Journalists Act, 1955 to incorporate a provision for imprisonment of 6 months for management of newspapers and news agencies not implementing the wage boards report. Besides Yadav, others who attended the meeting included IJU Suresh Akhauri and Madan Singh, IFWJ Parmanand Pandey, AINEF leader Roop Chand, NUJI Manohar Singh, Indian Express Employees Union leader C S Naidu, DUJ S K Pande, UNI Workers Union leader M L Joshi and PTI Federation leaders Ajay Tyagi, Sanjay Sinha and Rajbir Singh.

This is high time for the managements of newspapers to act fast and implement the wage board recommendations at the earliest without any further delay. Their attitude in not implementing a government order is ridiculous, atrocious and highly condemnable. Do these media barons don't know this wage board recommendation is coming after a gap of almost 10 years. What were the prices of essential commodities then and now. Are they not cheating by still continuing with the old salary which was given 10 years back. At least on humanitarian grounds they must implement this latest Majithia Wage Board recommendations at the earliest. - V.Ramesh, Bangalore.
