The Kerala Government Medical Officers Association (KGMOA) will go on a token strike on May 3, protesting against the government backtracking on the agreement it had reached with the association on wages.
The president of the KGMOA, Dr S Prameela Devi, told Deccan Chronicle that the government had held discussions with the doctors under the Health Services Department and reached a consensus on certain demands raised by them in 2008. However the government had gone back on the agreement, she alleged.
“We are continuing the non-cooperation strike started on February 27 and will hold a token shut down on May 3. If the new government fails to fulfill our demands, we will go on an indefinite strike from June 10 onwards,” Dr Devi said.
According to her, when the Ninth Pay Commission was constituted, the association had submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister requesting him to initiate necessary steps to include the case of health service doctors in the terms of reference of the commission. But the government did not consider this.
Though the KGMOA represented their case directly before the commission and appealed that the special pay and special allowance be included in the basic pay of doctors, this request too was ignored.
The special pay and special allowance had been retained as such by the commission in its recommendations, despite the government promises to the contrary.
“The association said the pay scales for doctors in the specialty and administrative cadres had not been restructured. This was another breach of promise by the government,” Dr Devi said.
