The announcement of an increase of Rs800 to Rs1,000 in monthly salaries of the staff attached to district and taluka panchyats ahead of elections to these local self-government bodies on October 21 has surprised many but union leaders welcomed the decision.
The revised payment with better dearness allowance and house rent allowance, to be made in cash with retrospective effect from April 1 last, is in line with the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission and will mean an additional annual burden of Rs200 million on the Exchequer at a time when the Bharatiya Janata Party regime is faced with a Rs1,200-billion public debt.
The beneficiaries include revenue officials like mamlatdars, deputy mamlatdars, office superintendents, teachers, sales tax inspectors and employees of district and taluka panchayats, all of whom were deprived of the salary hike when secretariat cadre staff’s pay was jacked up four months ago. Employees’ unions had threatened to launch an agitation if their demands were not met before Diwali.
