The members of the Tamil Nadu Government Doctors Association (TNGDA) on Monday threatened to launch a statewide agitation to protest against the State government for its failure to implement a pay structure on par with that of Central Government employees.Secretary of TNGDA, A Senthil, told reporters here that the recently released Government Order (GO) based on the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission included none of the demands which M K Stalin, Deputy CM, had assured them. For the past two years, the TNGDA had been staging protests and several round of negotiations were held with the officials to rectify the anomalies in the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations, he said.Medical college doctors/professors were subjected to work for extra four hours when compared to professors of government arts and science colleges. With just two hours duty per week and the rest of the days spent as preparation phase, a professor was paid Rs 46,000 per month compared to Rs 23,000 earned by medical college professors.Though the government doctors were entitled to risk allowances, these were not granted to them he said. These doctors treated more than 200 outpatients on a regular basis and with a 24-hour duty, they drew salaries lower than that of municipal health officers who had a lesser workload, he added. The TNGDA is convening a meeting of its executive committee in Chennai on June 14 and it will decide on a Statewide agitation to press their demand for a pay scale and promotion system on a par with that of Central government employees, he added.
