Despite being promised arrears, Maharashtra teachers refuse to end strike

Teachers across the state will receive their Sixth Pay Commission arrears by May 11, minister for Maharahstra’s higher and technical education department, Rajesh Tope said. The teachers have been strike for 90 days for various demands.
Tope added that if the teachers continue their strike he would impose the Maharashtra Essential Services Maintenance Act and take action against them since the education department has received the go-ahead from the CM.

But MFUCTO member CR Sadasivam says the arrears is a secondary demand. “Our main demand is the regularisation of the NET/SET guidelines that has affected a majority of teachers.

When the authorities resolve that, we will call off the strike,” he said.

The state education department assured that they would clear the remaining arrears of  Rs750 crore owed to teachers by May 11.

“To draw a sum of Rs750 crore from the contingency fund at a time requires the approval of the cabinet and consent of the governor. This is the norm to withdraw any amount that exceeds Rs300 crore from the contingency fund. We can then disburse the money to the teachers,” said Tope.

Tope said that the delay of releasing funds is because the cabinet meeting scheduled for this week was postponed to the following week.

“We will have to wait for the next week to get the approval,” said Tope.

“We are willing to pay the penalty as per the MESMA guidelines but we will not be bullied into calling off the strike till all our demands are met in writing by the authorities,” said Sadasivam.
