Coal India workers to get Rs. 20,000 Diwali bonus; strike off

After hectic backroom activity and negotiations, Coal India workers have called off the proposed three-day strike.

The company’s management has assured workers of a Rs. 20,000 bonus and an additional Rs. 1,000 bonus for Diwali. Unions have assured the coal minister that they will not strike work. Power plants can heave a sigh of relief as they can now expect to get coal over the next three days.

“The shortage of coal will be taken care of over the next 2-4 days,” said Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal.

Coal India workers had gone on a one-day token strike earlier this month, pushing for the same demands. The increased bonus for the workers will put a burden of nearly Rs.120 crore on India's largest coal company. That is lesser than a strike for each day, which can cause a loss of up to Rs. 150 crore.
