Gujarat clears allowance hike for state judicial officers

The state government has cleared a hike in the allowances of all judicial service officials in Gujarat in accordance with the Justice (Retd) E Padmanabhan Committee recommendations.
The Cabinet has cleared the hike, which is three to 10 times the existing allowances, with effect from January 1, 2006.

The Supreme Court had, in April 2009, appointed a one-man commission of Justice (Retd) E Padmanabhan to determine issues relating to the revision of pay and allowances and perquisites, payable to all judicial officers working and retired throughout India, on the basis of the first National Judicial Pay Commission.
The Commission had recommended a hike in scales of judicial officials of all cadres. Subsequently, the pay scales of the state judicial officers were hiked on June 26, 2009 by three times, along with the arrears due from January 1, 2006. At the junior magistrate level, the basic was increased from Rs 9,000 to Rs 27,700/pm with arrears effective from January 1, 2006.
But following the delay in implementation of the hike in allowances, the matter reached the High Court.
The recent order by the state Law Department said the state government has cleared the revision of allowances to all judicial officers with effect from January 1, 2006.
The amount of arrears payable to judicial officers who have retired or died in harness shall be placed at the disposal of the Principal District Judge of the district/Head of Department where the retired/deceased judicial officer last worked. Thereafter, the Principal District Judge or Head of the Department will handover the money to the family of the deceased judicial officer.
