After relay hunger strike today, IITs faculty threatens indefinite strike for pay hike

As the nation celebrates Teacher's Day today as a mark of respect and gratitude to them, nearly 4,000 faculty members of the prestigious IITs have threatened to go on an indefinite strike for improved pay structure.

Members of the IIT Faculty Federation will meet in Delhi tomorrow to take a final call on the issue, Devang Khakhar, Director, IIT-Bombay, told PTI.

Around 450 faculty members of IIT-B joined the nationwide relay fast this morning demanding better salaries and allowances as part of the nationwide stir by the faculty members of the renowned institutes.

Ten days ago, the faculty of the elite technology institutes had taken a mass casual leave.

Faculty members attended classes wearing black badges in protest, seeking prompt consideration of their demand by the Union HRD Minister.

'WITH FINGER KEPT STRAIGHT YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO TAKE OUT BUTTER'.
or in Hindi:
'SEEDHEE UNGLEE SE GHEE NAHEE NIKALTA'

This is clear from IIT Directors meeting with HRM Mr Kapil Sibal.

Kapil Sibal is also a lawyer of Supreme Court. In his meeting with IIT Directors he was successful in making them to see what was not there by giving a 'presentation'. And 'happily' they came out 'satisfied' from the meeting.

Unfortunately the teachers of all the IITs are unable to 'see' anything what their Directors could 'see' inside Mr. Sibal's chamber!!
That is why IIT teachers become Diectors but cannot become a Minister !!

Prem (most frustu prof. in India)

I have that MHRD presentation. There is nothing wrong in this presentation. Only thing is now to pressurise GOI for legitimate demands. In this presentation, GOI has accepted the pay disparity between UGC reders and IIT assistant professors. I have also informations that minister has promised to look positively into it.

Panky will you please publish the presentation that u mentioned above

The panky.... (His parents might have named him Pankaj but he chose to become 'Panky' - some may have their pet's name!!)
You are a spoilt brat.
You do not have manners to write or talk and I remember you used nasty abusive language in a blog that any sane, sensible and a normal person and that too a teacher will always feel ashamed of writing.
You are the one who was extremely frustrated to have cooled your heels for 7 years (may be more) in getting a Ph.D and all of sudden think yourself to be in a 'position' to question some learned person's affiliation.

I neither know nor want to know your 'affiliation' but surely have idea about your low 'taste' and brain hollow of any wisdom.
Make it a point not to poke your nose in such matters where elderly and knowledgeable persons are discussing some serious issues.
Your language using words like 'frustu?' speak your immature boyish brain and lower order of wisdom.
You can only do mudslinging because like an empty vessel...

I am not going to respond to your immaturish and childish comments.

I will again remind you of what I wrote for you earlier also that 'Fruit bearing trees always bow down and those without any fruits stand errect like stooks' - I only wish you understand the meaning of this but I am sure you dont have that capability.

Thanks Prem for your strong blog about some low tasted guys.
Two questions to you. 1. Do you not think, that all TECH faculties, irrespective of whether he/she is in IIT or UGC, or NIT deserve better pay scale than science/arts faculties.
2. Financial autonomy to certain extent should be given to premier institutes so that better performed faculties should be appraised.

Unknown said...

who cares?

Unknown said...

Dear ssplm,
I had written a blog earlier also regarding this and said the same thing in that blo that Tech teachers from all tech institute should get better salaries than general University teachers (UGC scales)NIT teachers should be given one step up and and IIT teachers still higher. We must realise this hirerchy exists there.
It is well known that sahmeless people with thick skin and dont care.

Dear Prem Sir

After your last reply to sspplm madam, i need not to say anything to her.. thats what a was trying to say to her for last one month.

Dear Pankaj,
Thank you.
You will be a decent person, I am sure only if you are a bit careful in dealing with others. I hope you will agree that we must have respect for fellow human beings and keep our heritage alive by being slightly more considerate to elderly people. They are like umbrella which protects us from bad things. Now if you have another look with cool mind at your comments with filthy language you will realise that they were really in very bad test. Can you imagine how your father or mother will feel if a rowdy writes such a filthy language about your sister?
When you deal with others in adecent manner you dont have to spend anything from your pocket and in return you get a similar decent opinion about you from others and look that too free - at no cost. On the other hand it becomes a reverse case. You are a teacher - I presume, and if so then your reponsibility increases because you have to shape your students by being a role model.
All the best my boy !

Thanks Prem. Unfortunately, Mehta committe report is silent about UGC Tech teachers. Also everybody has to note that there are several universities which have been marked as Centre of Excellence and University with Potential by NAAC, NBA and UGC. For these universities the research quality is in no way inferrior to IITs. Therefore, these universities can even claim similar status as IITs enjoy. My point is that rigid demarcation between IITs and good universities w.r.t salary structure is not at all a logical idea. In addition, the newer IITs in no way are comparable to good universities as far as research and teaching are considered. So what is sensible to all is to form a pool of good institutes. This may include good universities, premier IITs, reputed degree engineering colleges. The faculties of these colleges may enjoy similar status. Otherwise, enjoying better salary using the tag IIT and depriving other qualified persons can not be continued long. Incidentally if you go through the Yash Pal committe report or NKC commission report led by Sam Pitroda, if you will get the same tone as I tried so far. Thanks. Waiting for your valuable comments.

Mr. Goverdhan Mehta is a byproduct of University system. If I am correct, he served at Hyderabad.
As per IISc is concerned, he acted as a Director. I have no idea whthere he did something good for IISc. His Univ. mentality has not changed till todate. You can check his latest interview in this matter. So, it was unfortunate that such a person was chosen by Govt. of India for the head of 6th Pay comission panel for Technical Institute. He even told that he can not bypass UGC rule while prescribing salary for IIM/IISC/IIT or any good technical institute. So, he degraded and offended the whole teacher community of elite institutions in India. Mr. Mehta played the UGLY role in this matter. So, it has to be corrected with few modifications in the current 6th pay notification. It is under process.

Dear sspplm,
Yes it is true that not all the IITs and not all in the IITs are par excellance, nor in other technical institutes meritorious and performers are totally absent.
But by and large it is expected (?) that IITs are more research oriented and other institutes are 'teaching' oriented only.
But in my opinion a suitable mechanism to audit all the technical institutes academically should be devised and IITs should also not be exceptions to this.
So far all IITs irrespective of their performances, including the very new ones who do not have any track record so far are enjoying the benifits of brand equity name 'IIT'. Other good institutes just fade before any IIT because of IIT's brand value and even the government makes a lot of distinction when it comes to funding.

It is a welcome step that the entry level salary of an Asst prof has now been raised to Rs 37000+AGP 8000 in PB4. But the new pay regim does not seem to be caring about the faculty who are already serving for last so many years. Now the salry of a new entrant Asst Prof and the one with 17 years of service has become same!!
Similarly for Associate Prof and Professors also the seniority or length in service does not seem to be reflecting in their saalaries. In fact the 'bunching' of thier salary should now start over and above the 'minimum basic pay' offered to a fresh entrant. The Govt should not only 'attract' the new faculty but also try to 'retain' the already serving faculty. That is also equally important. IIT teachers Association and their Federation should also get this grievance addressed with MHRD. Even the UGC Fitment table fix more salary than the Table S-26 gives for same basic pay. Govt of India's fitment table also have a lot of anamolies. One Example is :

(a) For the old scale of 14300-18300, the new salary for basic pay of 19100 is now 44700.(Table S-24).

(b) For the old scale of 15100 -
18300 the new salary for same basic pay of 19100 is 46500 (Table S-25)

(c) Applicable to IIT teachers - For the old pay scale 16400-20000 (Please note the minimum and maximum are both higher than (a) and (b) above ) for the same basic pay of 19100 it is the 'less' than both above Rs 43390 only ( Table S-25).

It is surprising that the employees already working in a senior scale have been given fitment of lower pay - No reason can be convincing for this mesh made by babus.

NIT Pay Scales said...

Dear Kapil Sibal Ji,
WILL You walk a mile only for IITs ... ??????

WHY CANT YOU WALK A FEW STEPS----- ONLY A FEW STEPS.... FOR NITs.... .... IN PARTICULAR YOUNG FACULTY MEMBERS..... ARE WE NOT YOUR KIDS.....

NIT faculty members were made to wait for almost an year more than UGC. Finally MHRD discovered that we are same like UGC and has given the same UGC scales.....
Various NITs made a number of memorandums.(In a dignified manner as reported by IIM)
But, not even a single time their concerns were heard, in the TWO modifications MHRD has given dated 16th and 22nd.

The pay commission was framed to attract young faculty members with PhD and to retain existing faculty.
As far as NITs are converned MHRD has done everything possible to retain existing senior faculty members.

For young faculty members, MHRD said seven non compoundable advance increment will be given for a person with PhD.
Unfortunately, we don,t know, whether our English is bad or MHRDs, the existing faculty members with PhDs are given a mere TWO increments only. The argument is that a person who is going to be recruited after this GO and who joins with a PhD only will be given 7 increments. Even if a person submits his thesis and gets his PhD the next day of joining NIT, he will be eligible for only TWO increments.
Young faculty members with PhD represented MHRD through various memorandums to keep them at 7000 AGP AT LEAST.
BUT NOTHING HAPPENED FOR THIS DIGNIFIED(AS REPORTED BY IIM)PETITIONS TILL DATE. INSTEAD WE ARE PUNISHED STILL MORE BY GIVING JUST TWO INCREMENTS.

OKAY, If we think that We will leave this institution and join another as a fresher to get atleast the SEVEN increments promised for a fresher, UGC has recently come up with another regulation saying, Discretionary award of advance increments can be given only to Asso Profs and Professors and not to a person joining fresh AS ASSISTANT PROFESSOR(6.4.19 IN REGULATION 2009).
WHY..... What wrong thing we made....Spending 5 to 10 years in various industries and institutions before joining NIT is a fault...OR Did a bit of research to get a PhD in service is a fault... WHAT WRONG THING WE MADE....
SO, U WONT GIVE US PROPER SALARY... U wont allow us to join ANOTHER INSTITUTION also peacefully....(B,COS WE WILL LOSE OUR SERVICE AND WE MAY NOT GET ADVANCE INCREMENTS OTHER THAN FOR PHD......) So, MHRD should tell us what service we should do in our existing institutes...

THOSE WHO JOINED NIT AFTER SUBMITTING THEIR THESIS AND GOT THEIR PhD IN SERVICE IN A MONTH OR TWO AFTER JOINING NIT DONT KNOW
WHETHER WE ARE A FRESH FACULTY
OR
AN EXISTING FACULTY......

WE ARE NOT PROVIDED EITHER THE BENEFITS SHOWN TO EXISTING FACULTY(SENIORS)
NOR
THE BENEFITS GIVEN TO FRESH FACULTY.....
AND WE CANT LEAVE FOR ANOTHER INSTITUTION ALSO(for the reason mentioned above)
ONLY GOD CAN SAVE US ...........
